Technology & Scale-up

The technology exists. So why are projects still struggling to scale?

Across polymer recycling, sustainable fuels, low-carbon chemicals and much of the circular economy, there are technologies that have demonstrated that the underlying process can work.

The answers will look different for every technology, geography and market. But every successful project eventually has to address them.

Technical success does not automatically translate into commercial success.

A process can work in a laboratory or pilot plant and still face fundamental questions around whether the right feedstock can be secured, whether the product can find a viable market, whether the necessary infrastructure exists, whether regulatory requirements can be met and whether the economics work at commercial scale.

These challenges are also rarely solved by the technology company alone.

They can require coordination across feedstock suppliers, infrastructure owners, investors, regulators, certification bodies, customers and project developers.

Yet much of the support available to emerging technologies remains focused primarily on technology development. That is understandable. Technology is tangible and relatively straightforward to define and assess.

The remaining barriers are often less visible, but can ultimately determine whether a project succeeds.

The next phase of industrial innovation therefore isn’t just about developing better technologies.

It is about building the systems around them.
